A traumatized veteran Joe (Joaquin Phoenix) tracks down missing girls for a living. Memories of past violence visit him as he cares for his mother, suffering from dementia, in his childhood home between missions. Assigned to track down a senator’s daughter, Joe’s world spins out of control. His nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered, leading to what may be his death trip or his awakening.
